Basil (Ocimum basilicum) linalol-rich, organic from Nepal
Basil is a familiar cooking herb which many of us have grown successfully in our gardens. There are over 100 different species of Basil, each slightly adapted to its unique corner of the globe. The two most famous are the common cooking Basil and Holy Basil, grown in India and known there as ‘tulsi.’
Essential oil of Basil contains linalol, fenchol, alpha-terpineol, citronellal, eugenol, myrcene, limonene, and geraniol. This spectrum of chemicals suggests it can be used as a skin treatment for insect bites, general itching, shingles, and herpes. This oil can be fairly irritating on the skin though, and should be diluted with a good carrier oil like Sesame or Jojoba oil. Added to a shampoo or hair rinse, Basil has a reputation for promoting hair growth.
Used externally in a massage oil or in a bath salt, Basil can relieve the pain of muscle aches, rheumatism, and gout. It is said to improve the circulation by decongesting the veins and to be a good anti-inflammatory, making it useful for arthritis as well.
Diffused into a room or simply inhaled, Basil is said to be antiviral and can ease the symptoms of colds, flus, fevers, and bronchitis. It is even thought to restore the sense of smell when it has been lost due to sinusitis or rhinitis.
According to folklore, Basil essential oil is antispasmodic and digestive. This means that it is especially useful for stomach cramps and food poisoning.
Since Basil is not a scent that most people prefer to smell by itself, it is best to use it in blends. It blends well with Lemon, Juniper, and Lavender, among other oils. Psychologically, blends with Basil can help with anxiety, depression, and fear. This essential oil has a unique ability to clear the mind; promoting focus and intellectual clarity. It is an excellent memory stimulant and aid to concentration. Basil acts on the nerves; soothing and balancing them. It can be used for migraines, vertigo, and fainting spells. In addition, it imparts a feeling of positivity and thus, helps with indecision and apathy.
WARNINGS: Avoid during pregnancy. Can irritate sensitive skin if used without diluting first.
Always dilute your essential oils in an unscented carrier oil like Sesame or Jojoba. A good general rule is 10 drops per ounce of carrier oil. Do not take essential oils internally. Always store essential oils out of heat and sunlight. Keep essential oils away from children.
