Essential oil of Marjoram is my favorite essential oil to use when I have the bleary, aching feeling of coming down with a cold. I usually put 10 drops of Marjoram along with 3 drops of Roman Chamomile into a nice, hot bath. The fragrant result is that my aching muscles are soothed, my congested head and/or lungs are cleared, and my emotional state is calm, balanced, and ready for sleep.

Marjoram was raised by the ancient Egyptians and dedicated to the god Osiris, the god of both the afterlife and agriculture. The ancient Greeks called it ‘joy of the mountains’ and used it as a nervine, as well as a funeral herb to bring peace to the departed.

The chemical constituents of this essential oil include alpha-terpineol, terpinen-4-ol, sabinene, linalol, sabinol, thujanol, camphor, carvacrol, estragol, citral, eugenol, myrcene, and pinene.

Marjoram is antispasmodic. It can be diluted in carrier oil and rubbed on the chest to calm and regulate the heart, as well as to stop coughing. It is excellent for cramped, sore muscles. Five to ten drops of Marjoram oil in 1 oz. of massage oil can help with sprains and strains. It is an excellent addition to a sports massage.

Dilute 10-15 drops of Marjoram in 1 oz. of the carrier oil of your choice and rub it on your belly. It has been shown to ease indigestion, constipation, intestinal cramps and menstrual cramps, as well as bring on menstruation.

Essential oil of Marjoram is a vasodilator. This action makes it ideal for migraines, bruises, and arthritis. One or two drops of the oil can be inhaled for migraines. A massage oil can be used for arthritis and bruises.

During cold and flu season, Marjoram is an excellent oil to use in an aromalamp in your home. It is both antiviral and antibacterial, helping to ward off winter bugs.

If you do succumb to a chest cold, Marjoram is one of my top choices for treating ailments of the lungs. It is both warming and expectorant, easing lung congestion and soothing coughs. Marjoram can be diluted in carrier oil and rubbed on the chest for bronchitis and has even been shown to help with whooping cough. Marjoram oil is an anaphrodisiac. It can be used in cases of sexual obsession, or to enforce a vow of celibacy.

Emotionally, Marjoram is very calming and soothing. It can help with anxiety, insomnia, and depression. It stills the mind and helps us to accept loss, loneliness, or rejection. Marjoram stops over thinking which aids in appeasing anger, easing obsessive behavior, and even stopping vertigo.

Always dilute your essential oils in an unscented carrier oil like Sesame or Jojoba. Do not take essential oils internally. Always store essential oils out of heat and sunlight. Keep essential oils away from children and pregnant women.
