Pine (Pinus sylvestris) Hungary
Most of us are very familiar with pine trees. These hardy evergreens grow almost everywhere in the world and have many different subspecies. The scent of their needles is clean, familiar, and comforting. Ancient Greek physicians Dioscorides and Galen both recommended it for coughs and cleansing of the chest. Native American tribes used it to prevent scurvy or to repel lice and fleas.
In the world of essential oils, we consider all coniferous trees to be the lungs of the planet. Essential oil of Pine contains pinene, carene, dipentene, limonene, myrcene, sabinene, and ocimene among other chemicals. These substances have proven to be excellent for respiratory issues such as bronchitis, asthma, colds, and flu. Pine oil is antiseptic, antiviral, and antibacterial. These properties make it an actual detoxifying agent for the lungs. A few drops of Pine essential oil diluted in Sesame oil can be rubbed on the chest, or one drop can be placed under the nose for inhalation. It can also be diffused into a room using an aromalamp. All these applications can be helpful in cleaning the lungs of a person who is quitting smoking.
Pine can be a stimulating addition to a bath salt, where it can also be used to improve circulation, ease pain from arthritis or sore muscles, and prevent urinary tract infections. This aromatic essential oil also removes uric acid from the system, making it helpful in the treatment of gout.
A few drops of Pine diluted in Sesame oil can be rubbed into the skin to treat scabies, sores, and excessive perspiration.
The Pine tree is a tenacious plant which grows through the winter. Its tough spirit is beautifully preserved in the essential oil which can be used for courage, perseverance, confidence, and patience. Pine essential oil can help teach us to be more positive in the face of adversity. It can help us to strengthen both our identity and our boundaries; separating us from the issues of others and allowing us to experience forgiveness and freedom.
