It is the dawn of time in what is now called Egypt. The goddess of the night sky Nut arches her starry back over the world. The goddess of order Ma’at feels a stirring in the primordial waters of the Nile. A stunning, blue lotus opens its petals as the sun god Ra rises from the horizon. This lotus is different though. It rises from the waters because it is gracing the head of the beautiful Nefertem, who emerges from the water to bring balance between order and chaos. As his gleaming body is revealed, we can smell the blue lotus on his head, ripe figs, cedarwood, frankincense, and myrrh. These are the scents associated with Nefertem, the Egyptian god of scent. In later times, he will be thought to be the son of Ra and Bast, and depicted with a lion head. For now though, he is a beautiful young man with a blue lotus on his head.
Savor this precious prayer to Nefertem as part of your morning rituals.
