Chamomile was dedicated to the sun god Ra in ancient Egypt. It is one of the oldest documented medicinal herbs in England. The flowers were used as ‘strewing herbs’ in the Middle Ages. They were ‘strewn’ on the floors of buildings so they would be walked on and release their charming, apple-like scent.

The scientific name for this oil comes from the Latin word ‘mater’ for ‘mother.’ It has a great number of uses for women. German Chamomile can be used for painful periods, periods which are too heavy, PMS, and menopausal problems.

The color of this oil is a very deep blue, which comes from the high concentration of azulene, an anti-inflammatory chemical. German Chamomile reduces urea in the blood, making it very effective for gout and nephritis.

German Chamomile is especially good for the skin. It is, however, very potent, and must be diluted before use. Two or three drops in an ounce of carrier oil such as jojoba or sesame is sufficient. This mixture can be used on bruises, eczema, hives, and shingles.

This mixture can also be used as a massage oil to treat a wide variety of psychological issues such as depression, anxiety, fear, and anger. German Chamomile brings us to a state of stillness; clearing confusion. It allows us the peace of mind to further communication and banish resentment. That sense of stillness carries over to the physical realm, making this oil effective for vertigo.

Always dilute your essential oils in an unscented carrier oil like Sesame or Jojoba. Do not take essential oils internally. Always store essential oils out of heat and sunlight. Keep essential oils away from children and pregnant women.
